On Monday, Father Lawrence Nyaanga, who is also Kisii University chaplain said the number of youths drinking alcohol is on the rise.

“It is worrying seeing illicit brews being made and sold near schools. This has affected education standards in Kisii County leading to poor performance of students in national exams,” he said.

Nyaanga challenged Kisii County and national governments to move with speed to arrest and prosecute illicit brew dealers to save the youths.

“The number of illicit brew dealers in Kisii County is rising each day. Police with the help of Nyumba Kumi officials in villages should conduct a thorough crackdown to make sure no one engages in the illegal businesses in society,” he said.

He asked parents to advise their children on the dangers of alcohol and not encouraging them to drink illicit brews which may ruin their future lives.

Nyaanga added that illicit brews have increased the number of pupils and students dropping out of schools.
