Uasin Gishu Deputy governor Daniel Chemno has challenged maize farmers to venture into other forms of farming such as horticulture.

Speaking at Chororget Primary school in Kaptagat ward while donating 2,000 seedlings of pyrethrum to the locals, Chemno noted that maize farming was no longer a profitable venture.

“Horticulture gives maximum profits to farmers as opposed to maize and wheat farming," he said.

The Jubilee deputy governor regretted the recent misfortunes of in maize farming maintaining that through empowerment a farmer will be guaranteed maximum profit from other practices.

He also reaffirmed the county government's commitment to improving the livelihoods of farmers by using cooperatives to support them.

“Please join cooperatives as this is the only way through which the county government will support the local farmer," said Chemno.

He insisted that cooperatives will play a pivotal role in mobilizing resources, offering loans to farmers at subsidized rates.

Chemno further urged elder farmers to donate some pieces of lands to their children so that they practice other forms of farming.

On the other hand, the Agriculture County Executive who was also present reiterated that they working with farmers to empower them in all sectors.
