Residents of Athi River in Mavoko, Machakos County have protested increased wastes and poor garbage management.

They said the heaps of uncollected garbage had become an eye sore and health hazard in Athi River and its environs.

"There is a lot of garbage and raw sewerage all over, no action has been taken by the concerned authorities," said resident Cleophas Musyoka.

Musyoka spoke to this writer in Athi River on Monday.

"I'm not happy with the situation. As at now there is garbage everywhere, sewerage systems are blocked and the situation keeps own worsening," added Musyoka.

He said the pathetic condition was time bomb citing cases of children playing in raw sewerage returning home sick.

Anne Kanini said the residents were at risk of contracting infectious diseases like Cholera.

Kanini called for quick intervention by concerned authorities so as to avert the situation.

 "We urge the Machakos County Government through Mavoko Water and Sewerage Company to collect garbage and repair open sewerage systems across the entire Mavoko Sub County," Kanini said.

The residents said the Machakos Government should allocate proper garbage disposal areas to ensure clean and healthy sanitation.
