Nakuru residents have been asked to report any cases of children with disabilities hidden by their families.
Nakuru County nominated MCA Emma Mbugua said this will enable the county government integrate them into society. The integration will also ensure that the children get an education and that their talents are exposed and used gainfully.
“If children with disabilities are hidden, report the cases to your area chief or MCA so that we can act,” the ward representative said.
“Everyone is entitled to life and integration in society and we shall help empower such children because you do not know what they can do for society tomorrow.”
Speaking at Menengai primary school in Mang'u area of Rongai constituency, Mbugua said people living with disabilities have rights like everyone else to enjoy equal opportunities enshrined in Kenyan laws and several international conventions.
Mbugua was addressing parents of children with intellectual challenges who turned up at the school for a community mobilisation and awareness session. The event was jointly hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru.
The MCA, who lives with physical challenges, said early childhood education is now the responsibility of county governments.
