Maize farmers in Rurie Kiambu county have been asked to embrace an alternative crop for adverse effects on their maize crops with regards to the rising temperatures making the crops to dry. Speaking in Rurie on Monday, Kamenu MCA Chege Waithumbi said that maize farmers may suffer setbacks due to problems that come with rising temperatures in maize crops. He said maize plants are likely to be affected by dehydration among other effects causing the plants to dry. "To persevere the impact of the season plant indigenous crops like cassava, we also advise farmers to use recommended fungicides now and after the temperature rise," said Chege. He also said that the non-indigenous crops were likely to suffer from retarded growth which comes as a result of the weakening of its roots and protective skin due to much heat. Chege advised that laying some mulch on the crops would help control the available moisture and reduce the problem. He ended his tour by promising to give seedlings to farmers when the rains start.
