Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja threw his weight behind embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko, saying that the governor ought to be given time to deliver on his mandate.

Sakaja argued that the governor ought to be supported by everyone instead of being subjected to harsh judgments as Kenyans had given him five years to deliver.

His words are in sharp contrast to Jubilee vice-chair David Murathe's position that Sonko had performed poorly and could do better.

''Let us not pass unfair judgment that is premature on the governor. I think whatever issues there may be between the governor and elements in the national government need to be sorted out if we bring all the leadership together... I can say this unequivocally that Mike Mbuvi Sonko has a heart for the people of Nairobi. Let's give him the appropriate structure and support system to do his work,'' Senator Sakaja said.

Sakaja spoke on prime time TV Sunday night in a panel discussion of the state of affairs in Nairobi.

He maintained that any attempt to impeach the governor would be shot at the Senate.
