Seven members of the Machakos County Assembly Tender Committee were on Tuesday arraigned in connection with graft. Peter Wakaba, Peter Muema, Peter Kioko, Theresia Ngina, Jonathan Mulatya, Everlyn Munyiva and Nancy Wambui appeared before senior principal magistrate Bosibori Nyagena where they were accused of failure to comply with the law pertaining to procurement of goods. All denied allegations of being involved in corrupt practices by approving direct procurement in the purchase of 60 laptops for the members of the Machakos Assembly. Wambui is also accused of willfully failing to comply with the law relating to procurement of goods under regulation 59(2) of Public procurement and disposal regulations. She is accused of inviting requests for quotations for the supply and delivery of five laptops to the county assembly from unqualified persons who were not in the list of pre-qualified suppliers for the county on June 18, 2014 as the principal procurement officer for the Machakos County Assembly. The accused were released on a Sh5 million bond with a surety of the same amount or a cash bail of Sh1 million. The case will be mentioned in two weeks while the hearing date was set for January 16, 2015. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) investigated the matter before the seven were taken to court.
