The officer used his official gun to shoot himself in the mouth at a camp in Garissa Town and he died on the spot.

According to his colleagues, the officer has served in the region for three years and he wanted to be transferred to a safer region.

The officer was however transferred to Ijara AP camp in Garissa, an area that was attacked by Al Shabaab militants late last year.

“He was moved to near a post that was attacked by Al-Shabaab late last year. He was stressed and left a note to show he was not happy,” said a colleague as quoted by standardmedia.co.ke.

North Eastern regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh who confirmed the incident said an investigation into the incident has been launched.

“The officer who shot himself was recently transferred in the area. We have however launched investigations into the shooting,” said Mr Saleh.

This is the latest incident involving police in a series that have been reported of late and police say such cases are on the rise due to stress in the service.

Police officers’ relationships with their families, their colleagues and seniors among other issues have been identified as some of the causes of such incidents.
