Wajir Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) secretary Noor Bardad said non-local teachers began fleeing from schools in Wajir County after three teachers were killed last week on Friday by Al-Shabaab militants.

The Knut secretary said among the schools hardest hit by the teachers leaving include Khorof Harar Secondary school and primary schools such as Wajir Bor, Riba, Sarman, Kutulo, and Tarbaj.

Mr. Bardad threatened that they will withdraw teachers from terror-prone areas in the region if the government and local leaders fail to provide security to the non-local teachers.

He said the leaders need to come up with mechanisms that will guarantee security for non-local teachers to ensure learning continues.

Mr. Bardad also urged the government to address issues affecting teachers in the region such as providing telephone network coverage and security saying the teachers have sacrificed a lot in order to provide education to learners.

“We as the union will ensure that we withdraw the teachers from those stations if the leaders fail to address the safety of the teachers particularly Khorof Kharar and Kutulo education zones. We will not allow teachers to die like that anymore,” said Mr. Bardad as quoted by the Daily Nation.
