Speaking to a section of teachers from Mandera County in the Parliament, Sossion a member of the House team that handles education matters argued the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to solve issues concerning education in the county.

Teachers who complained about going through a lot insisted that they won’t tolerate the untenable circumstances anymore. Some teachers complained about discrimination based on religion, race, and clan.

“There is a gang in Mandera that frequently attacks teachers who are not from the area,” one of them said.

Exam cheating was another issue the delegation of teachers who paid a visit at the Parliament complained about. They said some school heads were involved in exam cheating during last year’s KCPE exams.

Worse is the sexual harassment and victimization of female teachers. One teacher complained about being denied leave because they didn’t give in to her head teacher’s demands for sex.

She said, “I was sick last year and applied for leave of absence but my head teacher would not approve it because I had refused his sexual advances. When I reported the matter to the sub-county director, I was told that I ought to have communicated the issue to the said head teacher.”
