Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has confirmed receiving the resignation letter from Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe.
The governor's Communications Officer Joab Mwaura however said that the news came as a surprise as they first heard of it through the media.
He said that the governor was preparing a full report over the matter.
"We learnt of his resignation through the media before receiving the letter. Mr Igathe had not indicated any discontentment before the events of today (Friday) which makes his decision a surprise," he said as reported by online publication Kenyans.
"As stated, Governor Sonko will establish the facts and give his considered view as soon as possible," he added.
