The county government of Uasin Gishu has re-arrested 18 street children who escaped from the Eldoret rescue centre several days after they were moved there from the Eldoret town streets.

They have since been taken back to the rescue centre.

According to the County officer in charge of security Paul Ruto, the 18 were arrested following a joint multi-agency operation on Friday.Speaking to the press in Eldoret town on Saturday, Ruto said the operation to remove all the street children from Eldoret town will go on.

"We arrested 50 people during the operation, 18 of them being the street children who escaped from the rescue centre after the Christmas celebrations," said Ruto.

"The street children have already been taken back to the rescue centre. Those with identity cards were released while those who did not have will be taken to court for failing to register," he added.

Governor Jackson Mandago had during the Jamhuri day celebrations ordered for the removal of all street children from Eldoret town which saw about 100 rescued. Eldoret town is believed to be home to about 2,000 street children.
