A notorious gangster who has been terrorizing residents in Mombasa County was on Wednesday shot dead by police officers.

Confirming the incident, Mombasa Police Commander Johnston Ipara said the suspect identified as Zakayo Ogode was a member of a criminal group involved in robberies in the county.

Mr Ipara said that the suspect was shot and killed at his hideout in Ziwa la Ng’ombe in Nyali Constituency during a major operation carried out by a special unit.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday at Kisauni Dog Section, Mr Ipara said the suspect and his gang were on police trail for a series of robberies within Mombasa and its environs.

According to the police boss, the gang have been carrying out several robberies in Nyali and just recently they raided a home belonging to a former police boss and stole jewellery worth Sh2 million.

The police said that they have been pursuing the thug for the last one week and investigation led the officers to his hideout.

“Our officers stormed his hideout and challenged the suspect but he fired back to our officers leading to exchange of fire, killing him on the spot.”

“This is a criminal who has been terrorising residents. Early Wednesday morning he raided a house together with his two accomplices and robbed a family of their items at a house in Nyali. The suspect was shot after he pulled out the Ceska pistol that he was armed with,” said Mr Ipara as quoted by Daily Nation.

The police boss added that during the operation, they managed to recover a Ceska pistol, 45 bullets, two toy pistols and four smartphones from the house.
