The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has termed recently rolled out textbook distribution programme as a wise decision.

Eldoret West KNUT Executive Secretary Jacob Arusei further said the initiative that will see all students joining form one given core textbooks is a major step towards reducing the cost of education in the country.

Speaking in Eldoret town on Friday, Arusei lamented that some booksellers were taking advantage of parents by arbitrary increasing prices when demand was high.

"This is a wise decision and comes as a relief to many parents who some unscrupulous businesspersons were robbing them of the hard-earned income," noted Arusei.

The KNUT official, however, asked the government to put in place measures that will ensure publishers don't close their operations for lack of business for their products.

"We must now strike a balance so that publishers who employ many of our people remain in business probably buy giving them tenders to supply the books to schools," he added.
