The two top leaders have often sharply disagreed on the key party and national issues.

Though the duo is considered as close political allies and confidants, their different political ideologies have often played out in public.

In the run to 2017 general election, Kalonzo and Muthama nearly fell out over the National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential flag bearer.

There were speculations that the former senator was ready to ditch Kalonzo's party and join Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic party.

Muthama who was representing Kalonzo in the committee responsible for picking NASA presidential flag bearer was accused of favoring Raila Odinga's bid.

A section of Wiper politicians accused Muthama of allegedly advancing Raila's interests in the committee instead of pushing for Kalonzo's bid.

The former senator was further accused of being an ODM mole. It was however during a Wiper meeting in Makueni, that Kalonzo publicly attacked Muthama accusing him of sabotaging his bid to fly the NASA ticket.

In front of thousands of supporters at a rally in Sultan Hamid on November 12, 2016, Kalonzo warned Muthama, saying that his alleged push to sabotage his presidency was not going to work.

Kalonzo castigated the former senator accusing him of allegedly intimidating and forcing some small Ukambani parties to fold up and merge with Wiper.

Muthama angered by Kalonzo's statement is said to have immediately abandoned the Wiper leader's campaign trail.

Kalonzo's statement towards Muthama caused some friction in the party with days to last year's general election.

It is through the intervention of Raila Odinga that saw Kalonzo and Muthama unite again as NASA picked the Orange leader to fly its presidential ticket.
