Sungu sungu sect is one of the oldest and illegal groups giving residents of Kisii sleepless nights as insecurity has deteriorated drastically.

Is there a story unfolding in your community? Let Hivisasa know

The sect is known to collect taxes from households, taking the law into their hands by solving community cases in the name of maintaining sanity and influencing dirty politics in the areas they dominate.

Suneka, Mosocho, Bonchari and Nyanchwa areas have been greatly infested the Sungu sungu.

Speaking to one of the members who requested to anonymity on Sunday, he claimed that the group is meant to maintain the Abagusii warriors' culture but gets funds from taxes collected, politicians and money paid to incase they solve minor cases in the community.

"We solve cases in the areas we dominate and we get paid by the involved parties. That's how we keep going," he said.

Various politicians in Kisii county have been accused of funding this group for their political gain where they will reduce the opposition to silence. However, the politician rejected the claims.

Speaking in Suneka last week, former Bonchari MP John Opore denied the claims of funding Sungu sungu and threatens to sue anyone who will associate him with the group.

"I have never been involved with this illegal sect and I will sue anyone who will associate me with it," said Mr Opore.

The residents of Sungu sungu dominated areas are living in fear as the sect has terrorist them, going to an extent of beating up suspected lawbreakers and killing witches.

In this manner, anyone can get trapped in their 'laws'

"We are living in fear as they can claim you brew changaa so that you can pay them," said Ann Kwamboka, a resident of Nyanchwa.

Ironically, the Sungu sungu have set up a secret office in Gusii stadium which is used in settling Kisii town based 'cases'

During our visit on Saturday, we found a boda-boda suspect being beaten and was forced to pay Sh.25000 as damage fee. This money was shared amongst the members.

If by any chances you are aligned in their chambers, they will harras you without considering your story for you to pay.

Suneka Chief, John Nyangenya, said that they have done much in ensuring that the illegal sect is swept out in the area to restore insecurity in the area.

"I call upon residents to report any Sungu sungu suspects to the authority. Kindly let's join hand in finishing this," said Nyangenya.

Speaking on phone, on Monday, Kisii OCPD Mr Francis Nguli said that the Sungu sungu sect is a thing of the past as they have dealt with the members.

"The police have ensured that this group has been swept away. The few remaining, if there is any will face the law," he said.

The group have been terrorising the residents for years now.
