It boasts of accommodating a wide range of ethnic communities.

Currently, large sections of the slum are occupied by members of the Luo community who have dominated the affairs of Kibera for quite some time.

However, they were not always the dominant group here.

The colonial government settled Nubians at Kibera after they (Nubians) returned from the World War and found themselves homeless. They had been conscripted from Darfur in Sudan.

Essentially, it is the Nubians who claim to be the original inhabitants of the area. The name Kibra is derived from the Nubian language where it means forest. 

But again, who lived at the place currently called Kibera before colonialism and the World Wars?

This could be an unmentioned fact, but Kibera, as is the case of the entire Nairobi, was a Maasai home where the community lived in as pastoralists.
