Traders operating in Thika town have donated foodstuffs and other goods valued at Sh1 million to Solai dam tragedy victims.

The traders led by their chairman Samson Kariuki confirmed that the donations which include foodstuffs, clothes and blankets have already been sent to the victims in Nakuru County. 

"As a way of showing love to the Solai dam victims, we decided to donate foodstuffs, clothes, and blankets to the survivors as they wait for the government to compensate them in order to start life afresh," he said.  

Kariuki called on the 47 counties in the country to set aside more funds to help in fighting tragedies like floods and fires.

He said well-wishers can also give their donations to the Solai dam victims so that they don't feel ignored and neglected during this trying moments. 

Samuel Njau, a trader at Thika market, said his colleagues are collecting donations which they intend to send to flood victims in Tana River County. 

"We have already started mobilizing people to give something to help our people who have been affected by floods in Tana River County. Kenyans should come together and help each other," said Njau.

He called on the national government to step up efforts to ensure more trees are planted across the country to help in curbing unnecessary floods.
