The nine trucks were impounded by the Migori County Government askaris at a roadblock near Rongo town.

The trucks were then moved to Rongo Police Station, after which the drivers were locked up.

Police reports indicated that the trucks were from Mombasa, and are suspected to have been on the way taking the imported sugar to a miller in Homa Bay County.

Migori county police commander Joseph Nthenge said they are investigating the documentation of the consignments, in order to establish if they were cleared by the relevant agencies.

"We will move to the next step after tying all loose ends in our probe," Mr Nthenge was quoted by the Nation.

This comes as Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i promised that the crackdown on illegal sugar will go on despite lack of support from a section of politicians in the country.

Earlier, government Spokesman Erick Kiraithe warned some politicians in the country against what he termed as opposing the government’s efforts to tackle importation of illegal sugar.

He said politicians should stick to the mandate they were given after being elected into office.
