The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has agreed to pay its former Vice-Chancellor Josphat Mwatelah Sh28 million for unfair dismal.

According to Daily Nation, Mwatelah was fired last year following a directive from Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i last year.

On Friday, the ex-VC confirmed that the university had agreed to compensate him as directed by the court, adding that he did not want to push the institution to the wall over the same.

“I didn’t want to press them hard. It is still my university and I want to usher in 2018 with a peaceful mind,” said Prof Mwatelah, as quoted by  Daily Nation.

The institution has embarked on recruiting a new Vice-chancellor after Prof Laila Abubakar was appointed to serve in the acting capacity.

Earlier, the Employment and Labour Relations Court Judge Onesmas Makau had ordered the institution to compensate the ex-VC following the termination of his contract on the grounds the minister lacked authority to direct for his dismissal.

The compensation was to comprise of all the benefits that accrued from the contract, salary of six months, 12 months gross salary for unfair dismissal and costs of the suit.

In a sworn affidavit, through lawyer Hebert Ashiruma, Mwatela also accused Matiang’i of frustrating his bid to take over at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
