Officials conducting the exercise said many of the youth were left out on the ongoing exercise due to either being underweight or their certificates and ID cards did not match.

Senior recruiting officer Lt. Colonel Zacharia Burundi said many youths were eager to be recruited but due to issues with their ID cards and certificates they could not be enlisted.

Addressing the press on the sidelines of the exercise held at Garissa primary school play grounds, Mr Burundi said out of the hundreds who turned up for the exercise they were only left with 60 candidates four of whom were women.

“A number of potential candidates had to be turned away because of a mismatch between the names in their ID cards and that of their academic certificates. We expected more women but we only managed to get 4 with one being from Mwingi that we had to eliminate,” he said as quoted by KNA.

Mr Burundi assured all candidates planning to attend the exercise which started last week that it would be free and fair and no one would be given preference.
