A University of Eldoret student is mourning after losing Sh34,500 bet he placed in Germany versus Mexico World Cup game on Sunday.
Albert Wekesa, a second-year student pursuing information science had placed a bet on a first half and full time win for Germany which never came to be.
''After doing my analysis, I found out that Germany was stronger than Mexico with the last match ending in a 4-1 win in favor of Germany. This is what informed my decision," Wekesa said.
He said the depth in Germany squad is what motivated him with the odds placed on them being much impressing and more realistic.
"When I looked at the match day line up for Germany, their players being superstars, the odds of 2.78 in the halftime and full-time, I definitely thought I was going to collect the money," he said.
When asked if he regrets making such risks, Wekesa said, "Definitely yes, it is really disappointing given that I had hoped to collect around Sh90,000 in that single match."
Though he seemed not bothered by the loss, his roommate confirmed that he at one point almost fainted but Sh120,000 he had previously won is what consoled him.
Betting in the campus in the recent days have gone up with most students betting on World Cup matches which have seen most of them count many losses than wins.
And with the World Cup matches not going to end soon, many students could end up drying their pockets in the hope of making a large amount of money.
