Kisii University students have started a movement which is aimed at sensitising fellow students on risks associated with abortion, which has of late marred the institution.

Led by Francis Kerongo, university assistant dean, the movement aims to reduce rampant cases of abortion which have become tantamount.

According to the don, statistics shows that over 175 cases of abortion have been reported in Kisii Level Six hospital as those that are done without the involvement of medics still remains a riddle to the management and students at large.

“We have come up with this initiative to combat the worrying statistics of abortion cases within the institution," said the Dean.

"we have a key role to play to ensure we realize a zero tolerance to the vice,” he added.

Barely a fortnight ago, one female student dumped a foetus around Tegemeo Hostel, a situation that has kept the health facilities on the look-out.

Brian Onyango, one of the student leaders appeals to fellow comrades to ensure that they be their brothers keepers and be on the lookout to report cases of impending abortion.

"We are aware that majority of the students who procure self-abortion is due to pressure and stigma they undergo in school and back home," said Onyango.

"Kisii University is not the only affected institution but it happens everywhere, so we would wish to sensitise colleagues from now henceforth to make our institution an abortion-free zone,” he added.
