The great cooperation between the multi-agency in charge of security and the people of Isiolo which led to the foiling of a terror attack of great proportions should not be taken for granted.

Hawk-eyed police officers last week disrupted a plan by five al Shabaab terrorists to massacre the people of Nairobi, in a classic case of "security starts with you and me".

The brave officers managed to kill one terrorist, arrested two, and are in hot pursuit of those that escaped with wounds. Police are now hunting the Nairobi-based accomplices of those terrorists.

As a country, we should be grateful for the unprecedented work rate our selfless law enforcement officers put in to recover the 36 grenades, five automatic rifles and the car with deadly explosives, which were assembled in El-Adde, Somalia. The foiling has saved the lives of hundreds of Nairobi residents.

What most Kenyans don't realise is that terrorists are always trying to launch attacks in Kenya, and the fact that the country has witnessed extremely few attacks in the past few years show that the sleepless nights our officers are putting in are bearing fruit.

Since the Nyumba Kumi initiative was introduced, and the great coordination between the various security agencies, such as police, KDF and the intelligence-gathering team, we have witnessed a long period of calmness and safety.

To help the officers, who put their lives on the line to protect every Kenyan citizen, everyone should report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood, since we can't have a policeman in every place.

Let us appreciate the sacrifices our officers make to keep us all safe. Let us not take it for granted.
