The Ministry of Education introduced students' Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) to be used during the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
These PIN numbers will replace what has always been index numbers. In the previous years, candidates have always used their index numbers to sit for these national examinations.
From 2018, candidates will be required to present their PIN numbers to sit for their examinations.To help them generate these numbers, the ministry came up with a computer programme called National Education Information Management system (NEIMS) which assist them to collect data from the over 10 Million students in Kenya.
What one needs to do is to visit the Ministry of Education with an original birth certificate of the student and the ministry will use the birth certificate to generate the student’s Personal Identification Number.
If the student does not have a birth certificate, then the parent/guardian needs to visit the Department of Civili Registration, which falls under the Interior Ministry to acquire the student’s birth certificate first.
The exercise of collecting student’s data commenced on January 27, 2018, its deadline which was initially to be on February 20 has since been extended to March 31st after it emerged that many children lack birth certificates.
