This was a direct contradiction to what Dr. Alfred Mutua, who was government spokesperson at the time, had said concerning the prolonged drought.

Dr. Mutua had sensationally claimed that the government did not have any statistics concerning the number of deaths from starvation in the country.

News of the deaths was already in the mainstream media but when quizzed, Mutua decided to take the route around the whole issue to save the government from its own blushes.

His assertion earned him the infamous title ‘The Government’s Spin Doctor’ courtesy of his infinite ability to sway public opinion.

The church was apparently upset at Dr. Mutua’s sentiments and even appealed to the government to utilize any available chances to make sure that the people in the country are well fed.

Inhabitants of Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid areas were the most affected as available sources dried up as well as the supply chains from other regions of the country.

Dr. Alfred Mutua went on to vie for the Machakos gubernatorial seat in 2013 and was elected to the position by the people, beating seasoned politician Wavinya Ndeti.

He would then be re-elected to the position in the 2017 general election but Ndeti contested the victory in court and successfully managed to convince the Court of Appeal that the election was marred with irregularities having failed to convince them so earlier on.
