The Senator was accusing the VC of misappropriation of university funds and skewed employment of staff.

These allegations had trickled down to students who were holding regular protests paralyzing learning at the institution.

On February 18, 2015, the Senator had organized a protest at the Chepkoilel-based University on the outskirts of Eldoret town as he pushed for the resignation of the adamant VC.

Melly who was accompanied by a group of Uasin Gishu County Assembly members (MCA’s) however faced the wrath of the anti-riot police who engaged them as the protest turned chaotic.

During the incident, the Senator sustained injuries and his bodyguard roughed up as he tried to defend him.

The police also lobbed tear gas canisters at a vehicle ferrying some MCAs, who had joined the protestors.

The Senator together with one MCA, who was at the time a few months pregnant was taken to the Elgon View Hospital before they were later discharged.

In the end, the Senator's demands were never fulfilled as Prof. Akenga has remained the institution's VC. He would end up being charged along with student leader Wesley Kogo, and politician Jonathan Bii for leading a protest that caused damages at the institution.
