Kalonzo served in Moi’s government as Foreign Affairs Minister between 1993 and 1998.

Prior to being appointed Foreign Affairs Minister, Moi had in 1986 appointed Kalonzo as Assistant Minister for Public Works, Housing, and Planning.

The Wiper party leader served in the position until 1988 as he also doubled up as Mwingi Member of Parliament.

Kalonzo at one point was considered as Moi’s close ally, advisor, and confidant.

In 1988, Moi appointed Kalonzo as KANU Organizing Secretary and deputy speaker of the National Assembly.

During this period, Kalonzo established himself as a strongman in Moi’s party.

However, he fell out with the retired president in the run-up to the 2002 succession politics.

Kalonzo quit Moi’s KANU party after he (Moi) picked the now President Uhuru Kenyatta as his successor.

Moi’s decision to pick Uhuru Kenyatta angered Kalonzo and other KANU bigwigs among them ODM party leader Raila Odinga.

It was widely expected that Moi would have endorsed Kalonzo or Raila for the 2002 election.

Kalonzo cut his relationship with Moi and joined other leaders who had ganged up under National Rainbow Alliance to end Moi’s 24-year rule.

Despite the 2002 fallout with Moi, Kalonzo is said to have reached out to the retired president.

Kalonzo was recently quoted saying that he is planning to meet the retired president.

There are speculations that Kalonzo is lobbying for political partnership with Moi’s son who is also Baringo senator Gideon Moi in 2022.
