Kahawa is a suburb settlement traversing the Kiambu and Nairobi borders along Thika Road. The estate is located in Ruiru Constituency, under the leadership of first-time MP Simon King'ara.

Kahawa, which is further subdivided into Kahawa Wendani and Kahawa Sukari is a residential area popular among students from universities and colleges located along Thika road.

Majority of female students prefer renting houses outside their campuses for various reasons such as privacy and the search for freedom, which is usually limited at the varsity hostels.

The estate is also on demand due to its proximity to the main road, which links Thika Town the country’s capital, Nairobi.

On the other hand, male students who rarely rent houses in Kahawa as they prefer to live on the campus, have several reasons as to why they shy away from dating ladies from the estate.

Despite the many relationships that sprout at the Kenyatta University, very few male students buy the idea of dating fellow comrades who reside at Kahawa.

Here are some of the reasons why:

1. Fear of stiff competition from working-class men and soldiers from Kahawa barracks

Majority of the male students believe their female counterparts residing in Kahawa date the soldiers, hence they don’t engage in romantic relationships with them to avoid any form of confrontation with the men in uniform. "Assuming you have visited your girl, then somebody knocks on the door, only to realise it is a KDF man," said Elias, a KU student who resides in Kahawa. Elias also noted that he avoids visiting female colleagues who live in the area.

2. Fear of responsibilities

KU guys assume dating ladies who have rented houses in Kahawa comes with extra responsibilities such helping them in raising money for rent. Earlier this week, a student at the campus was attacked by fellow comrades after she tricked them into raising money for her rent.

3. Not being in the same league

Female students who reside in Kahawa are considered to come from rich and able families, which makes their male counterparts view them as being out of their league.

4. Availability of other suitable options

Despite Kahawa being the 'ideal' residential area for many female students, some are comfortable with living in the campus hostels. Male students prefer dating this group of ladies, arguing that it easier to invest in the relationship, especially in terms of time.
