The government said it will forcefully evict residents living along Tana River who refuse to move out of flood prone areas.

Garissa County Kenya Red Cross coordinator Tusmo Ogle said most of the residents have refused to relocate to safer areas.

She said that the government and the Red Cross have made adequate efforts to warn residents in flood prone areas of imminent disaster due to the overflow of water from the Masinga Dam.

“We appeal to residents to heed warning of the floods and move to safer grounds. We also request for assistance from all stakeholders so we can evacuate residents,” said Ms Ogle.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter said  water levels at the Masinga Dam are increasing and soon it will overflow.

Mr Keter supported the decision by the government to evacuate people from areas surrounding the dam.

“In the event that water levels continue to rise, communities that live on the banks of River Tana, downstream of Kiambere Dam, are urged to take the necessary precaution. Those who live in Garissa, Hola, Bura and Garsen should move to safer grounds,” said Mr Keter.
