A woman aged 70 years was on Tuesday burnt to death by an angry mob in Bokoma village, Riana ward in Kisii South, on claims that she was practicing witchcraft.

According to witnesses, angry residents stormed Biyaki Kemunto Miruka’s home, kicked her out of the house and set her on fire using dry grass.

Kisii South assistant county commissioner Thomas Bett confirmed the incident and said the residents accused the woman of killing her grandson identified as Maxwell Miruka aged 12 years who until his death was a pupil at Nyamaiya primary school.

“The woman succumbed to burn injuries. Residents should stop taking the law into their hands and instead report any suspect to police for legal action to be taken,” he said.

The body of the deceased was taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital mortuary.

Police officers in Riana Ward, have launched a manhunt for residents who set the woman on fire.

“We are pursuing the suspects who have gone into hiding after they burnt to death a woman on claims that she was a witch,” said Thomas Bett, who is Kisii South Sub County assistant commissioner.

“We are all protected by the law. No one should kill another. Any crime suspect should be reported to police for action to be taken,” he added.
