Kibera parents to receive lessons on communication as a tool in parenting
Kibera's Soweto East Initiative has organised an event that will bring together all parents from the areas to sensitise them on the importance of communication with their children especially those below five years.
The November 1 event is spearheaded by Harambee Toto pilot project and will run with the theme, 'Communication between parent and child'.
Confirming the event on Friday, the Soweto East youth leaders said that parents in Kibera slum face many challenges including lack of finances to take care of the growing babies.
They said that, the parents are at times occupied with their daily routine to the point of overlooking the vital part of parenting which is communication with their vulnerable young ones.
"Communication between a child and a parent brings about bonding which results to a healthy child. Communication here does not mean verbal, but any form of sending a message, something which many parents seem not to gasp or just ignore," said Brian Chacha, one of the organisers.
The event will be held at Soweto East Rescue Centre and is expected to attract many parents within the community.
"The event targets all parents at Soweto East Village. It will highlight some of the ways which children communicate with their parents and how parents can identify these modes and reciprocate the same," added Chacha.
