The quality of university and middle level colleges education has yet again come under siege and fierce criticism.
Makerere and University of London-trained historian Prof Nyachieo Bogonko who was giving a public lecture on good leadership at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Kisii Campus blamed tutors and lecturers for neutralising the quality of education by ‘being too lazy’ to deliver content.
He said many students were struggling to maintain high quality of education, given the shallow content given by ‘unqualified tutors’, making him doubt the competitive ability of graduates.
“I believe that the quality of education in our institutions of higher learning is below par. Lecturers and tutors are too lazy to deliver content to the learners. I have seen them (tutors) dishing out handouts and turning up for lessons once or twice in a semester. Something is seriously wrong in our institutions,” he said.
Prof Bogonko urged institutions' managements to beef up surveillance on lecturers to ensure learning was taking place.
“I do not doubt lecturers who teach in our local universities but I am sure a number of them are under qualified. Managements should increase surveillance on these lazy fellows to give our learners what they need,” he added.
Prof Bogonko also challenged students to be innovative and urged them to desist from using unscrupulous means to pass their exams.
“I am a lecturer and I know what a number of you do to get grades. You have to go an extra mile and read extensively to the sake of quality. Otherwise, I think we are not doing well as institutions of higher learning,” said the Kisii University lecturer.
He discouraged use of handouts and challenged tutors to turn for lessons to guide learners.
“My humble request is we discourage issuing of handouts and turn up for lectures. Alternatively, you can dish out handouts but your presence to explain the content is crucial,” he said.
