An administrative chief from Nyamira County has urged people believed to be non-residents living in Riooga region to voluntarily surrender or risk been arrested by authorities.
Peter Orina of Riooga sub location on Sunday said the process will enable the local administration deal with rising cases of insecurity in Mosobeti market.
He said a number of residents have complained of rising insecurity in the region prompting the government to take that measure to crack a whip on criminals.
“It is true that we are facing a major insecurity dilemma and as government, I direct that those people who are not indigenous residents to surrender themselves to the authorities if they do not have national identification cards. It will help us get to know who is living here illegally,” said Orina, while overseeing application for National IDs, an exercise facilitated by area leadership.
He also asked non-locals with the cards to submit their certificates of good conduct or a letter from a local administrator from their original homes to vindicate themselves from accusations.
“I also authorise that those with national IDs submit certificate of good conducts or a letter from a recognised authority to show that they do not have criminal records. Failure to which, the two categories will be arrested for further questioning,” he added.
He said the move will also help deal with locals who might be engaging in criminal related activities that have seen at least ten shops broken into by robbers at Mosebi market.
