Health officials from Nyamira South Sub County have raised concern over the continued rise in HIV prevalence despite the existence of a number of intervention programmes aimed at fighting the scourge in the region.
According to the area Medical officer Dr Charles Motari, in 2015, the number of HIV infected persons increased by 30 per cent despite the fact that the government and other health stakeholders had intensified HIV awareness.
“We are calling for the residents to ensure that they take precautions when it comes to HIV so that we can reduce the number of new infection,” he added.
Dr Motari, who gave the opening remarks on Wednesday at a Nyamira hotel during AIDS awareness campaign Initiative launched by a nongovernmental organization called AHADI Kenya said that he is looking forward to see the numbers fall with time.
Evelyn Cheywa, a representative from AHADI Kenya disclosed that the programme, which will cover the entire Nyamira County will be implemented at sub county levels so that every resident can have awareness.
“We have started the initiative because from the health ministry, the records are showing that the numbers of infection are on the rise,” she added.
