Daraja Mbili market traders have demanded compensation from the county government after losing goods worth thousands of shillings to floods on Monday evening after heavy downpour.
Margret Osebe, one of the traders said she lost two boxes of tomatoes worth Sh12,000.
She appealed to the county government to compensate her to restart her business.
"The floods were heavy and I was unable to salvage my goods. My two boxes of tomatoes were swept away by floods, each cost Sh6,000. I ask the county government to improve the market and compensate those who lost their goods," she appealed.
She added: "We heard there was emergency funds to help compensate victims of El Nino and mitigate other effects. We therefore ask the government to act swiftly so that we can get back to business because some of us operate through loans."
Another trader affected by the floods, Wilfred Gisebe said: "The government has given several promises on improvement of the market and none has been fulfilled yet. We ask the it to construct big culverts to tame floods."
Kisii governor James Ongwae and his deputy Joash Maangi visited the site to assess the situation and promised to improve the welfare of traders in the second largest in Nyanza region after Kibuye of Kisumu.
Ongwae said his government in collaboration with the national government will construct a modern market and improve the drainage system to avert similar incidents in future.
The governor however said they had not received El Nino funds from the national government.
