A man sustained injuries after police shot at a car in which he and his colleagues were allegedly escaping in at Daystar University, Athi River Campus Wednesday night.
Addressing the press at Athi River Police Station on Thursday, Athi River deputy county commissioner Kodeck Makori said the driver of the vehicle declined orders by police officers to stop and instead sped off, prompting them to shot at the car, with an aim of deflating its tires.
Makori said the Toyota Vitz was reportedly driven to the main entrance of the institution at 2am and its occupants ordered guards manning the university to open the gate or else they kill them.
He said the guards declined the orders and the car's driver started pinning it in circles at the gates as the occupants, whose numbers were not known, shouted killing threats to the guards.
Makori said it was at that point that the guards called administration police officers based at a patrol base within the area who swiftly responded.
He said the officers did not find the car at the scene when they arrived since it had left shortly but returned a few minutes later when the officers were interrogating the guards on the incident.
"The officers tried to stop the car when it reappeared but its driver refused, forcing the police to open fire at it with an aim of deflating its tires but unfortunately a bullet went astray and hit one of the occupants, injuring him," said Makori.
Makori said the vehicle did not stop even after the occupant had been shot, it managed to speed off and completely disappeared from the police.
He said the vehicle was later found Thursday morning with two occupants after police launched a manhunt for them as the other who sustained bullet injuries got arrested when he sought treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
The two men, said to be students of Daystar and Kenya Methodist University, were locked up at Athi River Police Cells where the vehicle was also detained.
Makori who was flanked by Athi River Police boss Kitoro Muzito and administration police commander Stephen Matu called on Daystar University students, Athi River Campus to remain calm as police investigate the matter, asserting there was no cause for alarm.
