A number of aspirants in the highly anticipated Kisii University elections scheduled for Friday have urged the administration and elections board to consider extending the campaign time from 10pm to 12pm to allow them reach more electorates.
They have also written to the Dean of Students Gladys Osoro to revoke an administrative clause that bars them from using vehicles to campaign.
Speaking on Sunday at the institution’s premises, aspiring Secretary General Antony Marigi said the move will minimise cases of violence and dissatisfaction among students.
“We have written to relevant authorities and we want to make it clear that we haven’t been given enough time to campaign. Since the Election Day remains unchanged, we want them to extend the campaign time to 12pm from the current 10pm. We also need to reach more students at other satellite campuses hence use of vehicles should be introduced,” he said.
Aspiring President Seth Anunda backed his colleague and promised need for the administration to comply with the request to avoid a possible fall out between students and the administration.
“We don’t want the situation to escalate because this is purely a students affair. They have to comply with our request because its one week remaining and we need to reach more students,” he said.
When contacted on phone, Mrs Osoro said she had received the request but insisted the students ought to obey the current regulations unless communicated otherwise.
“Yes I have received the request but I think security reasons were behind the existing rules. They (aspirants) have to wait till we make an official communication regarding their request,” she said.
