Boat owners ferrying customers along Masinga dam have been urged to avoid carrying excess passengers in a bid to curb cases of boat capsizing and people perishing.
Speaking on Thursday in Masinga town, Masinga sub-county deputy county commissioner John Odengo said that greed for money lure the boat owners to congest passengers which is very risky as the boat can capsize.
Odengo spoke this while confirming an incident where 8 people died after the boat they were in capsized in Masinga dam.
Odengo disclosed that the boat capsized due to weight overload as it was reportedly carrying twenty-four passengers, four motorbikes and three sacks of maize.
He urged boat riders to be conscious of their passengers' safety since not every person knows how to swim adding that overconfidence and assumptions could prove dangerous.
"An overloaded boat is bound to capsize, why risk your life and those of the passengers," wondered Odengo.
