Child labour is a word that is not really acknowledged in most African countries because there is never a child too young to work.
For the two children in DC market in Kibera, child labour is clearly a brand. The children accompany their mother to the market daily where she sells githeri as they sell tomatoes and the other merchandise she has on sale.
The children seem to be comfortable with being in the market. The question is since they are always there selling, do they get to go to school? They said the mother had instructed them to sell tomatoes in the market as she also sells githeri at a small kiosk she owns in the market to make double profits to get the daily bread.
"Our mother wakes us up early in the morning and tells us to come and sell tomatoes daily in the market because we do not go to school," the children said.
These children might not know child labour but what they are going through certainly describes the term.
