A Non-Governmental Organisation in Kisii has supported the county commissioner’s call for unison among civil society groups.

Speaking to this reporter in her office on Friday, the Daraja United Women and Youths Empowerment (DAUWOYE) CEO, Winfridah Abuya said the move would ensure transparency and accountability for the donor funds.

Mrs. Abuya noted there were rampant cases of ghost groups masquerading in existing groups’ projects and use them to get funds from donors.

“Some ghost groups hide in the projects done by other organisations to fetch money from donors. What they do they go to the ground and take photos, forge receipts and make a report on the usage of the grant funds they have been given. This is because some groups purport to be existing, receives money from different donors for the same projects with existing organisations.”

She said familiarizing amongst various civil society organizations in the county will ensure no duplication of projects.

“I vehemently support the move to have all civil society groups in Kisii County come together and share the projects they are conducting to avoid duplication which creates imbalance in distribution of resources to residents,” observed the NGO boss.

She added: “This will help such that if I know one has a certain project in a given area, I will deviate and carry mine in a different area and this will ensure that our county is covered well and not concentrate in one area.”

Her sentiments come three days later when Kisii county commissioner, Chege Mwangi warned non-governmental and other organisations in the county against duplicating programs.

Mwangi challenged the NGOs to consolidate their resources and work plans as part of the strategy of maximizing their anti-HIV/Aids campaign in the region, among other projects.

He was making the remarks on December 1 2015, during the marking of World Aids Day, the event that took place at Gusii Stadium.

Mid this year, during the launch of DAUWOE in Kisii town, National NGO council chairman Wilson Kipkazi gave a stern warning to organizations flouting the rules and regulations of the council.

He asked NGOs in the region to use the grants from their donors well by initiating projects that benefits residents.
