Kisii County Commissioner Chege Mwangi has called upon journalists and the county residents to stop posting unconfirmed reports on social media, saying it was unlawful.

While addressing the press in his office on Tuesday, Mwangi said anyone found using social media to spread sensitive security information risks prosecution.

He advised members of the public with such sensitive security information to report to security agencies, who will take appropriate action.

“Rather than post such information on social media which will cause unnecessary panic and tension, give the information to the police for appropriate action,” said Mwangi.

This follows posts on social media that indicated that university campuses in Kisii county have not taken safety measures, just in case of any terror attack, reports that have caused fear among students in the area.

The commissioner assured the residents that there is adequate security in Kisii and that police are always on high alert.

“People posting unconfirmed reports on various social media sites need to know that such actions are illegal,” warned the County Commissioner.

“If anyone has information on any security situation, avail it to security agencies who will investigate the reports instead of using  social media to cause tensions,” he added.
