Secondary schools in Kisumu County have been urged to assist their students in applying for national identification cards.

Morice Akal from the Centre of Multiparty and Democracy said application and collection of identification cards is easier when students who qualify do so while still in school.

Akal said many people usually find the process of seeking for IDs as tedious and therefore give up easily.

“In school, it is collective, and in most cases, people are only required to give details and the rest is done for them. For many years we have been urging youths to collect the document all in vain, but if we use schools, it will be easier," said Akal.

He  was addressing journalists in Kisumu on Tuesday.

He added that schools should be used in educating young people on the importance of owning an ID.

“IDs are important when it comes to voting and getting other important services, schools should play a vital role in imparting this knowledge so that students who leave before 18 years old can go collect their IDs,” he added.

Akal further called on the relevant departments to partner with secondary schools to ensure issuance of the document is achieved.

The official also called on the government to launch civic education on the importance of identification cards.
