Rosemary Odinga’s Unabelong campaign team on Friday toured DC area in Kibera.
The campaign which seeks to rally residents on the need to apply for national identity cards has been well received by the public.
Coordinator Meshack Odede said the campaign is not intended to rally people to get identity cards so as to enable them get voter's cards but also ensure they access other services.
"I have heard people say we are giving people identity cards so that they can use them in the 2017 general election. This is not true because these IDs are supposed to give people a sense of belonging," said Odede.
He said the drive will help residents get the crucial document so that they can access services which they cannot without it.
"Without an ID, one cannot be admitted to university. This means if people will not have IDs, they cannot and will not be educated" he added.
He also said according to the Registrar of Persons, 1.5 million people live without identity cards yet they have attained the mandatory age of 18 years.
"This means 1.5 million people are not paying taxes. This kills the country's economy. We want to help our country’s economy grow that is another reason we launched Unabelong campaign," he said.
