The American government has announced its intention to re-open its Mombasa Consulate which was closed in early 1990.

During his tour of Fort Jesus, in Mombasa on Tuesday, US Ambassador to Kenya, Robert Godec, said the consulate will be opened this week to show the growing US confidence of the Coast region.

''One of the duties during my tour in this region will be to open an honorary consulate office in Mombasa,'' said Godec.

Godec, who is currently touring the coast region, said this move was to show that the US is working closely with the Kenyan government to fight terrorism, which has in the past been linked to Mombasa.

Mombasa residents and American citizens living in the county have expressed joy in this news as for a long time they have been forced to go to Nairobi to seek consular services.

The British honorary consulate in Mombasa was also closed last year in June, due to what the British government termed as potential threats aimed at both Kenya and the international community in the region.

With the US re-opening its honorary consulate in the region, county residents are hopeful that the UK will do the same.
