Women in Kiambu County been urged to have their blood pressure checked to enable early detection and prevent deaths.

Kiambu medical superintendent David Kariuki who spoke in office Tuesday said it has been observed that majority of women do not have their blood pressure checked in order to prevent kidney damage, risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

He said they are raising awareness to women in the region and countrywide to encourage them to take precautions and always know their blood pressure to prevent heart diseases.

The superintendent added that high blood pressure is mostly brought about by the kind of lifestyle people live.

He said those who use products containing nicotine such as cigarettes, tobacco and being exposed to second hand smoking are at high risk of getting high blood pressure therefore people who smoke should stop to avoid acquiring the various diseases which can cause death.

The doctor explained that both men and women should limit their alcohol intake to not more than two standard drinks per day for men and one drink for women, this way, they can maintain their blood pressure.

He emphasized that women should try and manage stress by figuring out what situation makes them feel stressed and find ways to avoid such circumstances.

Kariuki reckoned that they should maintain good weight by eating healthy and enjoying physical activities most days of the week.

If one is overweight, loosing even a modest amount of weight can help to reduce once blood pressure,” he reiterated.
