A national government retiree in Thika West Sub-County has appealed to the national government to introduce a health insurance policy to cover retirees and the aged.

Morris Mwangi, a retired secondary school teacher said that retirees and the aged should be provided with a favourable health policy by both the national and county governments.

"The cost of medical treatment for Kenyans seeking specialised services out of the country has gone extremely high. It is beyond reach of the common Kenyan but with a special health policy, many lives could be saved,’ Mwangi said.

"Teachers' unions have been unable to come up with health policies to rescue teachers from heavy medical expenses after retirement something that leaves them to take loans and organise funds drives," he lamented.

Mwangi who was speaking to HiviSasa in Thika town on Friday, further urged the national government to improve the existing health facilities to diagnose diseases earlier since health services are devolved.

Mwangi requested the government to further subsidise health costs adding that the millions spent on health tourism in India and other parts of the world should be channelled to improving health facilities at home.
