The gubernatorial race in Nyamira County is likely to take a new dimension after a section of youths from the region held a meeting on Saturday evening at Dados Hotel in Kisii to deliberate on the issue.

The meeting, chaired by youthful Engineer Julius Mokaya resolved to support a youth in the race for the top county job following what they described as discontent with the leadership of incumbent governor Mr John Nyagarama.

The group, Nyamira Young Professionals will also facilitate sensitisation campaigns across the county in a bid to mobilize young people to go for elective posts.

“Most of us here are not politicians but we cannot run away from the effects of politics in our society. Poor leadership makes even the innocent suffer and we want to be crystal clear that we are not satisfied with the county leadership that is why we want to front one of our own to run for the big seat,” Mokaya said.

They said they were ready to support the candidate they will nominate in their grassroots elections.

“We are not being used by anyone to settle political scores. We want to assure the public that it will not be business as usual. Sensitisation campaign kicks off soon and it’s not only on gubernatorial seat,” Mokaya added.

His counterpart Mr Churchill Onduso said the youth were keen on increasing their representation in the county government.

“With devolution, youths can be more relevant if we fight for representation at the grassroots. We are ready for the fight and our plight can only be addressed if we win seats in the County Assembly and of course the gubernatorial seat,” he said.

Whoever will be nominated by the team will join the incumbent governor, Mr Charles Mochama and Mr Evans Misati who have already expressed the interest in the race.
