The county government of Kisumu is set to spend Sh21 million in constructing bodaboda sheds.
Each of the seven sub counties according to Roads, Transport and Public Works Chief Executive Rana Hanif will receive Sh3 million to fund the project.
The work will however, be implemented in phases because of budgetary constraints, Mr Hanif told this writer on phone on Wednesday from Kisumu.
"We will start with Kisumu Central before rolling out to other sub counties," he said.
"The Sh3 million for Kisumu Central has already been released and work is expected to start any time."
Kisumu County is among devolved units in the country with the most flourishing bodaboda industry.
Although there are no clear figures showing the total number of registered bodaboda riders in the county, an association of the riders in Kisumu town says there could be approximately 30,000 commercial motorcycle operators in the county.
The association's executive who recently spoke to this reporter said the number of the operators is unkonwn since some riders are not registered.
In December last year, Governor Jack Ranguma said the county would construct 34 motorcycle sheds across the lakeside county.
“I have instructed my minister for enterprises to work on that budget to come up with sheds for every base in the city. I have a vision for this sector and it has started,” Ranguma said then when he met representatives of the riders in Nyalenda slums.
The programme according to Hanif projects at easing the riders' business operations.
Hanif said selected bodaboda operators will also be trained on road safety.
