Mombasa is one of Kenya's oldest town with a history dating back to the fifteenth century.

It is slightly over 100 years younger than the country's oldest town, Lamu, whose construction is said to have began in 1370.

The arrival of European explorers and Indian businessmen placed Mombasa above other Coastal towns as the visitors established entities that significantly explain Kenya's history.

Among the entities established after the arrival of the explorers is what today stands as Kenya's oldest club- Mombasa Club.

So what would any holiday maker in Mombasa need to know about this club?

The 121-year-old club is the only entertainment joint in Old Town Mombasa where alcoholic drinks are sold since there are no clubs in Old Town. However, not everyone can pop in and order for a drink as it is exclusive to members only.

The club at the beginning admitted only Europeans. However, today, the joint is multi-racial as anyone can be admitted. In fact Queen Elizabeth stayed in the club during celebrations to mark Kenya's independence in 1963.

Mombasa Club, according to data from National Museums of Kenya was built in 1896 after construction works for the Kenya-Uganda railway began.

The first 60 members of the club were British men and for one to be a member, one had to earn at least £250 (about 36, 250) per year. Membership was however, later opened to both men and women from other races and the number grew to over 2,500.

Mombasa Club has 26 well furnished bedrooms, and two well stocked bars and a restaurant, TV rooms and a swimming pool.

People below the age of 18 in the company of their parents are allowed into the club but restricted to the dining room.
